Chapter 300

Carol had left the building.

Maja followed two lawyers, but her mind was preoccupied with Neil’s condition.

He’s still out cold, without telling when he’ll come around.

They ended up in a nearby park, a quiet spot perfect for discussing matters.

Just as she sat down, she spotted Connie Raymond sketching in the distance.

Connie apparently noticed her, too, and strode over.

“Penny! Long time no see!”

Maja nodded slightly and smiled, “Still sketching, aren’t you?”

Connie heaved a sigh.

“Yep, I was planning to catch up with lan, but he’s been swamped lately and doesn’t even have time to

chat.”

Connie glanced at the two suit–and–tie guys next to Maja, furrowing her brows. Hadn’t she seen them

somewhere before? “Penny, you look like you’ve got something on your plate. I’ll let you get to it. I still

have some sketching to do. If you’re free, could you help me out? I’ll treat you to a meal as a thank

you, deal?”

Without hesitation, Maja nodded in agreement.

Connie resumed sketching a hundred meters away from Maja, neither disturbing the other.

The two lawyers exchanged glances, their foreheads creased. They hadn’t expected a member of the

Raymond family to be here. Maja sat on the bench, and while facing the two men, she asked, “Did my

dad consult with you guys about something?”

“Ms. Pennyfeather, could we continue our discussion at a café?”

Maja was a bit puzzled. The park was near the hospital. She could return to the hospital sooner if they

wrapped up their talk here Why the need for a café?

A sense of unease crept up on her, and she stood up abruptly, her palms breaking out in cold sweat.

Could it be that these two weren’t lawyers at all?

Meanwhile, Connie was sketching away when she suddenly paused. It hit her. She had seen these two

guys before. They seemed to be bodyguards from the Shepard family.

She looked over at Maja and saw her swiftly walking towards her.

The two men remained where they were, with their eyes fixed on them.

Connie’s driver was not far off, ready to report any incidents to the Raymond family.

They didn’t give chase; they merely grabbed their briefcases and took off.

Maja came up to Connie with her legs still a bit shaky.

What would have happened if Connie and her driver hadn’t been there?

“Penny, why were you hanging out with the Shepard family’s bodyguards? Got some business to

discuss?”

Connie was still in school, oblivious to the schemes of the Shepard family.

But when Maja heard what she said, her eyes flashed coldly.

“Those were the Shepard family’s bodyguards?”

“I’m not sure; they just looked familiar. They could be bodyguards who’ve worked for some other family

before.”

Connie couldn’t be certain.

After all, daughters of wealthy families usually have two bodyguards trailing them. They could be

bodyguards from the Shepard family or from any other family.

Maja stood to the side, her back still drenched in cold sweat.

Connie didn’t notice anything amiss and simply linked arms with her in a friendly manner.

“So, you wrapped up your business talk already? Let us see the sketch. I’ll treat you to a meal later.”

Maja didn’t decline. The park was peaceful, perfect for sketching.

If she were to part ways with Connie now, she had no idea where those two men would be waiting for

her.

The safest bet for her was to leave with Connie.

A few hundred meters away, the two men dialed Glenn.

“Sorry, our plan was solid, but we ran into Connie unexpectedly. We’ve met her before when we were

bodyguards for the Shepard family, and her driver was nearby too. We failed.”

Glenn gripped his phone tightly, his eyes filled with malice.

He had planned to lure Maja away by pretending to be a lawyer discussing company matters, then drug

her. He wanted to torment her for days and nights until she cried and begged for mercy.

But he hadn’t expected Connie to show up at the park near the hospital.

Tormented daily by his suffering, he was at his wit’s end. He had to have Maja!

“I’m adding an extra half a million dollars. You must bring her to me!”

He gritted his teeth maliciously. Something had gone wrong with him, twisting his psyche.

His fists clenched tight. He had to torment Maja. That was the only way he could be satisfied.

The two men éxchanged glances.

Ever since the Shepard family fired them, they’ve been hard up for cash. Glenn’s offer came just in

time. He’s already paid them a hundred grand, and now he was adding five times that.

“Don’t worry. She might be on high alert now, but we’ll keep tailing and snatch her when the opportunity

arises.”
