“Are you awake? Would you like to rest a little longer?” Jackson’s voice sounded.
Startled, Serenity looked up at him. “I… I fell asleep Why didn’t you wake me up?”
“You were sleeping soundly, so I thought I’d let you sleep a little longer,” he replied.
“But I promised I’d go visit Yanny. I’ve overslept now..” As she spoke, Serenity picked up her phone and
checked the time. Thankfully, it wasn’t 3 pm yet, but she couldn’t afford to wait around any longer
before heading to the hospital.
“You’ve got enough time for a trip to the hospital. I’ll come with you,” said Jackson as he put on his

Serenity nodded. She suddenly remembered that her hair was in a mess, so she reached up and
pulled off the elastic hairband. She then grabbed a bunch of her hair and tied it up into a new ponytail.
The whole process took only 5 or 6 seconds. Jackson was a little surprised by the speed of her
movements. “Have you always been this quick with your hair?”
“No. I used to take all day to get my hair right, but during my time in prison…”
Serenity came to an abrupt pause. After all, her past was unpleasant for either of them.
“I’m sorry,” said Jackson as he hung his head.
No it’s nothing. It’s not like you put me in jail,” Serenity said hurriedly. She tried to resolve the tension
by adopting a more relaxed tone. “Although life behind bars was hard, I’m now better at reading people.
I know who has my best interests at heart, and who’s only wearing a mask.”
If she hadn’t gone through all that, she would probably still be shackled by her delusions about love.

Jackson’s gaze darkened. He glanced at Serenity and asked, “Aren’t you afraid that I might be wearing
a mask all this time?”
She stared at him for a moment before replying smilingly, “I am someone who has lost everything, so
you don’t have at reason to maintain a facade toward me. At the very least, I can’t think of a reason for
you to act that way.”
“Yeah, you’re not too far off the point.” Jackson smiled at her as he took her hand. “Come, let’s go.”

him on the table next to his bed, hoping he would notice it the moment he woke up.
