Leopold rolled his eyes at her words and said with a smirk, "Who else would | hide for, if not you?" He grabbed her hand and pushed open the garden gate, making their way into the house.
As they approached the staircase, the cry of a baby pierced the air.
Aurelia's heart skipped a beat, and she hurried up the stairs.
In the room, a nanny was soothing a small infant while another was preparing a bottle of formula.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAurelia was in shock, "Whose child is this? It couldn't be Megan's, could it?" Leopold's lips curved into an enigmatic half-smile.
Aurelia was astounded. Megan's baby had been taken away by him.
After the baby finished feeding, Aurelia stepped forward, inspecting the child closely. He didn't look a thing like Leopold.
Yet, she teased, "He kinda looks like you." Leopold choked, "Are you blind?" She stuck out her tongue playfully, about to retort, when she noticed the nanny changing the baby's diaper.
Her eyes bulged, her jaw dropped open and it stayed that way.
Good heavens, what had she seen? "It's not a girl?" But she saw that the baby was a boy.
Leopold lifted a finger to her lips, silencing her, "Who told you it was a girl?" Aurelia swallowed hard, her mind racing. So, Megan had a boy.
Well, it made sense. With all the advancements in technology, blood tests, and ultrasounds, the chances of a mix-up were virtually nil.
"AK Group swapped Megan's baby, and they even told her it was a girl." That was cold-blooded.
If Megan ever discovered the truth, she'd lose her mind.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmOnce the baby fell asleep, Leopold guided Aurelia out of the room.
Aurelia plopped down on the sofa, her mind whirring with thoughts.
"AK Group's plan was a bait and switch, using Geoffrey's child to replace Megan's, fooling her into thinking she had a daughter to keep her stable. Then they'd use the real baby for a paternity test to seal the deal." She paused, shifting her tone, "But they never accounted for you intercepting the child." And they certainly didn't anticipate that the baby wasn't even his.
Leopold's mouth twitched into a sly grin, "That's what they call being outfoxed." Aurelia clicked her tongue. This was a duel of wits between geniuses.
With her average mind, she could never have concocted such a complex scheme.
"AK Group must be like ants on a hot griddle, scrambling to find the baby. Now, their whole plan's been thrown into disarray." She suddenly felt the urge to fan the flames of doubt in Megan's mind towards AK Group, to shatter her trust completely.
Leopold rubbed his temples, a hint of irritation in his voice, "Next month, I'll be officially divorcing Megan." "Ok." Aurelia's voice was nonchalant, causing his brow to furrow, "That's your reaction?" "What else?" She shot him a sassy look, "Should | be clapping and cheering?" Inside, Leopold felt a wave of melancholy crash over him.
"You can't even pretend, can you?" Aurelia pouted, "What good would be pretending to do for you? I'm straightforward. You don't wantto hide my true feelings and be insincere, do you?" His frustration was palpable, like a bone stuck in his throat, unable to swallow or spit it out.
"Heart of stone, you're heartless." She gave him a sidelong glance, "It doesn't matter to me. If you despise me, kickout anytime. I'd even thank you for it." Leopold was speechless, giving her forehead a flick, "You're too green to try and play me." Aurelia thought, "How dare | try to play him? That would be like an egg trying to crush a rock."
